Are you physically active or do you have a high consumption of diuretics? Maybe you are simply getting older and thus have a lower rate of absorption? All of the above can cause a deficit of vitamin B2.

The absorption of vitamin B2 is reduced especially by alcohol, sugar, coffee, tobacco and diuretics. In addition, older people need more vitamins and minerals as the body's aging weakens the ability to absorb nutrients.

Vitamin B2 is an important component of two different coenzymes called FAD (flavin mononucleotide) and FMN (flavin adenine dinucleotide) that are necessary in the cells' energy production and therefore in the metabolism of carbohydrate, fat and protein into energy. Athletes often require extra B-vitamins to counteract fatigue and exhaustion.

Vitamin B2 is also a key component in the body’s production of antibodies and is also involved in the production of several vital substances, such as niacin (B3), noradrenaline, serotonin, histamine and fatty acids.

Vitamin B2 contributes to normal function of:

• nervous system
• energy metabolism
• mucous membranes
• skin and vision
• formation of new red blood cells
• metabolism of iron
• protection of the cells from oxidative stress
• reduction of fatigue and exhaustion

As always, all B vitamins works better together, as their enhancer each other’s functions. We therefore recommend to take B2 along other B-vitamins or with B-vitamin-rich foods.
