Iodine is an important trace mineral, and is used in is different hormones, including Thyroxine. Thyroxine is produced in the thyroid and is used to control our metabolism. When the iodine is used up, it is released from the thyroid and excreted through the kidneys.

It is relatively easy for our body to absorb iodine. Some of the iodine isotopes are radioactive, and during a radioactive emission, our body will absorb some of the radioactive iodine. It is therefore recommendable to take a supplement with no-radioactive iodine, like Berthelsen Iodine.

Lack of iodine can lead to low metabolism, goitre, tiredness and exhaustion. Denmark and many other european countries have therefore, through national law, enforced a requirement to add iodine various foods, including table salt. The newest data from "Den Danske Jod- og Stofskifteundersøgelse" from 2014 still showed, that the general population in Denmark were iodine deficit, despite the forced addition of iodine in salt, milk and bread.

Iodine has many important functions in our body, including:

  • maintain normal cognitive functions
  • maintain normal nervous system
  • maintain normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function
  • normal energy yielding metabolism
  • maintenance of normal skin

You should be careful not to overdose iodine. The safe upper limit is 450 mcg per day.
