If you are pregnant or are planning to be, then you should consider a supplement of folic acid. Folic acid, also called vitamin B9, has many important functions in the body and especially before, during and after pregnancy.

The Danish Health Authority recommends that you take a supplement of 400 mcg folic acid at least 1 month before getting pregnant and continue taking folic acid during the first 3 months of the pregnancy. Folic acid is crucial in preventing neural tube defects (defects of the brain, spine and spinal cord) in the early stages of pregnancy.

Studies have also shown that approximately 50% of the adult population lacks folic acid. Especially smokers are often in deficiency of folic acid, and they may need up to 3 times as much folic acid as non-smokers.

Folic acid is a very fragile vitamin, and it is easily destroyed by heating and light exposure. It can therefore be difficult to get enough through the diet, especially if you are consuming processed foods.

Folic acid contributes to the following in our body:

  • normal tissue growth in pregnant women
  • normal blood formation
  • maintaining a normal mental function
  • maintenance of the immune system
  • normal cell division process
  • reduces fatigue and exhaustion

All B vitamins have synergistic effects, since the B vitamins are dependent on each other. It is therefore recommended to consume a balanced diet with plenty of vitamin B sources.
